Be careful with scented candles. I love them and use them all over the house but never near the food. And remember that certain scents are overpowering. I try to avoid heavy florals and frilly sweet fruit scents like pear and pineapple because I find them cloying. Instead I opt for clean, crisp scents like citrus, verbena, and herbs. Also if you’re using scented candles don’t overdo other scented household products like plug-in air fresheners or your house will be overpoweringly scented. If you’re used to lots of scent, you might not notice but your guests will.
I often shop for candles at bargain stores, if they look good and don’t have dings or scratches then I’ll buy them. I don’t think you have to spend a lot of money on candles; in fact this is one of those times when more is more. I’ll choose to buy more cheap candles rather than fewer high-quality ones. Pillars are my preferred candles. Tapers are a bit formal, best saved for dinner tables, but pillars have a solid look. They seem somehow casual and friendly, and they come in so many different heights and widths. They’re extremely practical, they don’t burn much during the course of a party and so I reuse them for my next soirée. I think they look even better when they’ve been used for a while than when new.
One final word on candles: remember to use them only when it’s dark outside—unless they’re on a birthday cake.
PROJECT VELLUM-COVERED PILLAR CANDLES
This is such a great project because it transforms a plain pillar candle into something unusual or unique. What’s more, this decoration does not harm the candle in anyway, so you can simply remove the vellum wrapper after the party and use the candle for your next event.
The vellum wrappers can be customized with words that suit your party’s theme or style or the name of the guest of honor. You can even print a picture on the paper if you choose.
